Steve Bliss: Choosing the right person to manage your estate after you’re gone is a crucial decision.

This individual, known as the Executor for a will or the Trustee for a trust, will be responsible for carrying out your wishes as outlined in your estate plan documents.

Consequently, it’s essential to select someone trustworthy, organized, and capable of handling financial matters. Moreover, they should be someone who understands your values and priorities and is willing to dedicate the time and effort required.

Notwithstanding these considerations, many people find it challenging to choose an Executor or Trustee. It can be a sensitive topic, as you’re essentially entrusting someone with significant responsibility over your assets and potentially even the well-being of your loved ones.

I recall one instance where a client struggled to decide between two close friends. Ultimately, after careful consideration and open communication, they selected the friend who had demonstrated stronger financial acumen and organizational skills. It was a relief for them to have made a confident decision.

According to a recent survey by Caring.com, approximately 60% of Americans do not have a will or trust in place. This highlights the importance of proactively addressing estate planning needs.
