Steve Bliss: One crucial step is determining your goals and objectives. Ordinarily, this involves reflecting on your values and what you want to achieve with your assets. Do you want to provide for your spouse and children? Support a favorite charity? Create a trust for a grandchild’s education? Clearly defining these goals lays the foundation for a well-structured estate plan.
Notwithstanding, sometimes clients come in unsure of their goals. In those cases, we work together to explore their priorities and identify what matters most to them. We might discuss family dynamics, financial situations, and personal aspirations. Ultimately, the goal is to craft an estate plan that aligns with their unique circumstances and wishes.
Brenda Jones: I imagine there can be challenges in helping clients articulate those goals?
Steve Bliss: You’re right. Sometimes conversations around death and inheritance can be emotionally charged. We strive to create a safe and supportive environment where clients feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. A few years ago, I met with a widowed woman who was deeply affected by the loss of her husband.
She had no estate plan in place and felt overwhelmed by the task. We took it slowly, discussing her priorities step-by-step. It turned out she wanted to ensure her grandchildren received their inheritance at specific ages, reflecting her belief that financial maturity comes with time.
It was a rewarding experience to help her create a plan that honored her husband’s memory and provided for future generations. Studies have shown that 70% of Americans don’t have a will or estate plan in place (American Bar Association). This highlights the critical need for legal professionals to guide individuals through this process.
